Numeracy is the ability to process, interpret and communicate numerical, quantitative, spatial, statistical, even mathematical, information, in ways that are appropriate for a variety of contexts, and that will enable a typical member of the culture or subculture to participate effectively in activities that they value.

Gecijferdheid is het vermogen om getalsmatige, kwantitatieve, ruimtelijke, statistische en zelfs wiskundige informatie te verwerken, te interpreteren en ermee te communiceren op manieren die passend zijn in een grote verscheidenheid aan contexten. Dat vermogen moet het voor een specifiek lid van een gemeenschap of subcultuur mogelijk maken effectief te participeren in activiteiten die hij/zij belangrijk vindt.

Mathematical literacy is defined (in PISA) as:

the capacity to identify, to understand and to engage in mathematics and make well-founded judgements about the role that mathematics plays, as needed for an individual’s current and future private life, occupational life, social life with peers and relatives, and life as a constructive, concerned, and reflective citizen.

Wiskundige geletterdheid is gedefinieerd (in PISA) als het vermogen om wiskunde te herkennen,te begrijpen en te gebruiken. Het is tevens de capaciteit die het mogelijk moet maken goed beargumenteerd te oordelen over de rol die wiskunde speelt, en dan wel die wiskunde die nodig is in iemands huidige of toekomstige leven, werkzame leven, sociale leven met kennissen en familieleden,en zijn/haar leven als een constructieve, betrokken en reflectieve burger.
