Introduction definitions Numeracy and Mathematical Literacy |

The concepts of numeracy and mathematical literacy are relatively young. In articles, in research, in discussions, you hardly find any unambiguous definitions. Almost every article on numeracy or mathematical literacy starts with a section about the range of different definitions and the inflation that is taking place in using the concepts for everything that has something to do with numbers, mathematics and education. On de page Definitions of Numeracy three rather common definitions are collected.
For a sound overview of perspectives on and definitions of numeracy and mathematical literacy I point at the Article "Mathematical Literacy" of Eva Jablonka, which is published in June 2003 the Second International Handbook of Mathematics Education.
